Cowboys & Aliens: Review

So it's been about four days since I've seen Jon Favreau's new film "Cowboys & Aliens". I must say that I wasn't all sold on this film. Nothing in the trailers blew my mind, but it did have Indiana Jones and James Bond together again; so that alone was worth the price of admission.

I want to keep this as spoiler free as possible; so I won't go into the story much, but I will say don't go into the movie expecting anything groundbreaking. It's a summer popcorn flick, and it's a pretty good one at that. There are however, some issues I have with the film.

One of these issues is that the aliens never really feel menacing enough, and to be frank I think I would've enjoyed it even more with out the aliens. Had it have been about Daniel Craig trying to figure out who he is with a little sci-fi on his arm-all while trying to find Harrison Ford's gold, and dealing with neighboring Indians would've been prefect. The movie never really reaches the level of intensity of the first attack. Everything after that just kind of falls flat. There is also a scene involving a character about half-way through the film that ALMOST destroyed the movie for me. I absolutely hated it, but I was able to get past it and enjoy the movie.

Now after what was just typed it may seem as though I didn't like the film as I previously stated, but despite what I've typed beforehand I really did have fun with this. The best thing about the movie has to be the acting. Harrison Ford is pretty great as the old guy who realizes he's not the badass he once was, and that he might need help *spoiler alert* to get the town citizens back. You can really see how humbled he is beneath this alien power he doesn't understand. He's a joy to watch.

Daniel Craig is a complete badass in this movie. He radiates this "don't fuck with me" vibe that's just awesome. I think he takes out like three guys with his fists on two or three different occasions. Just watching him in this makes me so excited for the new Bond movie.

Everyone else in this movie are great as well. Paul Dano is spot on with his spoiled rich kid portyal and Sam Rockwell is well...Sam Rockwell, which is never a bad thing. The only person I didn't really like was Olivia Wilde (she did look super sexy).

In short, "Cowboys & Aliens" isn't without it's flaws, but if you're willing to turn your brain off then you're in for a good time time. I give it an "you're in for a good time with no extra stimulants required".

Sorry for the delay. I guess it's okay because my one reader happens to be someone I see everyday. Well not much has been going on in the life of Aaron. I currently work at a Best Buy. It has it's ups and downs, but all in all I enjoy it.

Hot Tub Time Machine: Review

Hot Tub Time Machine stars John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke. It opens this Friday, and thanks to Xbox Live a friend and I were awarded advance screening tickets to it some weeks ago.

Hot Tub Time Machine is excatly what you'd expect from a movie with a title as ridiculous as this; a two hour, hilarious distraction from the real world.

Now the plot isn't life changing by any stretch of the imagination, but if you expected a life changing plot after reading the title, then this movie probably isn't for you. Lou (Rob Corddry) is your average fortysomething party freak, and after a night of partying he finds himself in his garage revving his engine to the beat of a Montely Crue song. The build up of carbon dioxide causes the obvious black out, and an unknown savior calls the ambulance just in time. At this point Lou's friends Adam (John Cusack) and Nick (Craig Robinson) vist Lou at the hospital. Both Adam and Nick are under the impression that Lou had just tried to kill himself. So instead of telling his friends it was all just a big mistake, lou uses this oppertunity to try to reunite his friends who have slowly been leaving him.

The three friends and Adam's nephew, Jacob (Clark Duke), travel to there favorite 80's ski resort. Once there it's apparent that the town and resort have fallen on hard times. Once our characters are in their room the "partying" starts. After several hours (and a failed attempt at trying to get a hooker by Lou) the "party" is then taken out to the hot tub, and I'm sure you know what happens next.

This movie is The Hangover meets Back to the Future in just about every way possible, and it definitely works here. The movie does get a little slow towards the middle, but it picks right back up again. It's filled with 80's pop-culture jokes, and Crispin Glover and Chevy Chase have some entertaining roles.

All-in-all Hot Tub Time Machine is exactly what you'd expect from it and then some. I actually found this to be more enjoyable then The Hangover, but then again I did over indulge (I saw The Hangover six times in theaters!)

I'd give Hot Tub Time Machine a 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

What to Expect...

Well this is my first blog; so it's safe to assume that I'm fairly new to this. I'm an aspiring novelist, and my plan is to use this blog to document my journey. Now that won't be the only thing that'll be discussed. I'm an avid movie-goer, and a gamer at heart; so expect some reviews time-to-time.

Now to get the introductions out of the way; my name is Aaron and I'm twenty years old. I'm a full-time student, full-time procastinator, and a full-time day-dreamer. A lot of people might say that I tend to be argumentative, and I have to be right. I disagree with that evaluation, but then again that could be my argumentative side...

If there is anything that anyone would like to know, you can simply ask. I'm terrible at these intro things..

But now that this first post is out of the way, the flood gates are open, and posts should be pouring in. Expect more today!!!
